| Alaska Grayling Fishing in Deering, Alaska: |
| Fishing in Arctic Alaska |
By Tyler Eddy
|
Teaching in Selawik for
four years allowed me to be able to travel around
and enjoy the northern areas of Alaska. Deering is
a small community of less than 200 people. When
you fly into the village you first notice that
there are only two rows of house. We were met
at the airport by a friend and fellow teaching
for the Northwest Arctic Borough School District.
We went straight to the river to spend the rest
of the day fishing. With little success of grayling
we headed down stream to a larger pool and had
great success caught salmon.
Our host came back out to join us on the river
and added great excitement to out day.
That evening we laughed about the hook and visited with our host and other
teacher while talking about plans for the next day.
I was able to get up earlier then the rest of the group and headed out on
my own to the nearby bluffs. Having the use of a 4 wheeler was the only way
that I was able to get around in a timely manner. Allowing me to go the bluffs
and watch a herd of Musk Ox roam in the wild. Later that day we heading south
of Deering to a old mining community of Utica. There were about 10 building
still standing and all the machinery was still in place. Utica was not the
goal of the day, but the river passed right next to Utica. We had reached
our goal and had great success, grayling everywhere. Cast after cast we lay
out our line across the river and reeled in grayling after grayling. Moving
further south along the river we were able to enjoy caribou passing on a
near by ridge and musk ox roaming the valley. I remember the first musk ox
I saw this trip. I took loads of pictures and the last musk ox I did not
even stop for. Funny how that works.
The next day we were only able to get out on the river to fish for more salmon
to fill the coolers before we headed home. Selawik does
not have a strong salmon run, instead the rivers are filled with Sheefish. |
